Who shoulder the responsibility to educate children into good citizens, parents or schools? Over this question, people differ from each other in their opinions. To my point of view, both play pivotal role in children’s education, just in different aspects and during different phases of children’s physical, psychological and mental developments.

As “the first teacher” of children, parents undoubtedly have the responsibility to teach their kids how to be respectable members of their community. Each society has their own rules, regulations, traditions and convention; therefore it is of great significance that parents familiarize their children with some of those basic codes and rules, so that the children will grow into respectful and respectable citizens with dignity and decency. It is parents who teach us how to greet other people in a proper way; it is parents who tell us how to be considerate and hospitable; it is also parents who illustrate by their own words and behaviours what are good manners in public places and interpersonal communication; it is also parents who exert formative impacts on us in terms of the outlook of the society and world. Parents’ role is indispensible in shaping their children into good citizens.

At the same time, schools also play a critical part in educating children into virtuous society members. All societies expect and respect members who could contribute to the welfare and progress of the community. In order to be respectable members, people also need to be useful besides being decent and nice in temperament. That means people need skills, expertise and professions to make contribution to the society they live in. Schools are just the institution that aims to equip children with useful skills, expertise and professional knowledge. School is an invention as well as an escalator of human civilization and it plays a key role in educating children into good citizens.

It is conspicuous that both parents and school play an indispensible role in molding children into good members of the society and they deserve equal respect. What is more, parents and schools could achieve much more in children’s education if they can join efforts by exchanging more ideas and opinions.
